Job Summary

This technical position will work as a team member to analyze fish health issues and enhance fish performance.  Clear Springs Foods produces rainbow trout that are processed and distributed to customers nationally.  Additionally, the Company partners with off shore producers of seafood.  Clear Springs is a fully-vertically integrated company that controls all aspects of its food business from inception to market.  

Essential Functions

  • Assist in the Diagnostic and Research Laboratory using microbiology and molecular biology tools.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of applied research projects.
  • Take appropriate actions to understand, communicate, and help improve the fish health and environmental performance of farm operations.
  • Participate in discussion about confidential/sensitive matters.
  • Communicate with other employees and departments through written and oral interactions.
  • Work in cooperation with all members of the Farm Operations and Quality Assurance groups.
  • Champion a continuous improvement culture.
  • Comply with company policies and procedures.
  • Travel between different company facilities as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

 

Qualifications

  • Requires a BS with two years of practical experience or a MS in microbiology, molecular biology, or related field.
  • Skilled in fundamentals of microbiology and molecular biology including aseptic technique, cell culture, bacterial and viral culture, DNA/RNA isolation, and experience with PCR, qPCR, and ELISA assays.
  • Proficient in fish necropsy and diagnostic techniques.
  • Experience with operation and routine maintenance of technical and analytical equipment.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills as well as leadership capability.
  • Ability to function independently and as a team member to foster a positive work environment.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to read, speak, and write with clarity of expression sufficient to communicate technical and complex concepts in clear and easily understood terms to employees with varying levels of technical knowledge and skill.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of Clear Springs Foods or others.
  • Ability to pass drug test.

Typical Physical Activity

This job involves medium work exerting force to move objects.  The worker will be required to have a range of motion as follows: 

  • Often requires walking or moving to accomplish tasks.
  • Occasionally requires pulling or lifting using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, drag, lift, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Lifting is required on a regular basis.
  • Repetitive motions are required which involve movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Involves indoor and outdoor activity.
  • Able to perform repetitive standing, sitting, stooping, walking, stretching, reaching and use full range of body motions.
  • Hearing must be adequate to perform duties and interact in person clearly and efficiently.
  • Manual dexterity as required for specific equipment or instrumentation use.
  • Requires clear vision, the ability to identify and distinguish color and to adjust focus.

 

Typical Environmental Conditions

The worker is frequently subject to inside and outside environmental conditions at all times of the year.  Job requires handling fish, feed and water.  May be exposed to fish pathogens and hazardous chemicals and will be required to adhere to OSHA regulations and infection control policies.

 

Travel Requirements

Overnight travel may be required 5% or less of time to attend scientific meetings and maintain technical abilities. Travel requests must be approved by the Director of Fish Health.
